Hi! I'm Corrie! I love the violin and sharing knowledge of my favorite instrument. I hope it helps someone out there!
How to Tune Your Violin | Everything You Need to Know
I tried to cover as much information as possible for tuning. There is actually so much to talk about! Whew.
So important to remember:
When you're tuning; always use slow, long, quiet bows so your tuner can pick up the sound correctly. When tuning with the pegs, it's always good to tune it a bit flat and finish with the fine tuner than to tune too high and risk breaking a string.
Please comment any other questions! I'm sure there's something I missed!

Tuning Apps Mentioned: GuitarTuna, Soundcorset, Cleartune
Physical Tuner I'd Recommend: amzn.to/4c9Fw0c
Tuning Fork I'm using: amzn.to/3Rjrm4G

Okay, I chatted with my sisters to create this video. They're all also professional musicians. (violin, viola, and cello. Yes, we're a quartet too lol) And these are the three things we noticed have stayed true over our 30 year musical careers. 1. Play vs Practice. Some days you just don't feel like practicing! So don't! Just play. Play your favorite song. Make something up! It doesn't really m...

I am 39 and play violin for almost 1 1/2 years. I am still working into getting into a practice routine. If I don't like I the song or piece I work on, i spend like 30 mins on it in a whole week and play basically whatever else there is I like. 😂I am just now at the point where I practice scales with the whole bow.. Not because my teacher never told me to practice this way, more because I am stubborn I guess. But I do so now.. I practiced my scales.. I practised my vibrato. I use drone tones. Etc. But never the whole bow.. I am getting there.. So for now it's whole bow with shifting and vibrota. And keep that wrist lose and flexible..
I prefer to, unless it's unmusical, to use the forth finger, say playing in first pos, play A on the D string with my forth unless it's really unmusical, whacked out with regard to needing fingers next on adjacent strings, you know what I mean. It helps get it stronger, but I must admit my vibrato on my forth is still totally shitty !!
Open A, 4, 1, 4, 2, 4, 3, 4 ... sounds alot like the theme of interstellar
Im enjoying your lessons and enthusiasm. A few years ago I bought a cheap banjo and tried to teach myself. I eventually gave up cause the sound was not good. I learned my lesson and when I decided to try to learn to play the fiddle, I purchased a violin that was not a beginner model
🌹
Thanks Corrie again for this tip 😊
Thank you, I’m learning 4th finger notes now. 😊
Summer Vivaldi
I’m glad you mentioned getting a decent violin for a beginner. I’m going to be taking lessons and l’m going to get a good violin.
Vivaldi Estate
Wonderful!! :-)
These are all good pointers ( though it is quite possible to do vibrato without using a shoulder rest because it is a matter of balancing on the collarbone and allowing the hand to support the violin at the other end- many many great players have beautiful vibratos without using a shoulder rest, although some have a small pad or sponge to help with stability of the violin) but at 12:52 you get into the hardest part for most students- the ability to let go of the support of the wrist against the rib and not let the wrist cave in like a pancake. That is actually the trickiest thing to establish and doing the previous steps does not guarantee when the student lets go of the rib that they can control that. Would you consider doing another video that addresses that issue at greater length? What I have found essential is that students must understand how they are moving and realize the movement does not involve pushing the wrist up from underneath. They can only see this in a mirror watching themselves to train their hand to only go back and forward so the wrist does not independently push up flat underneath the neck. This requires careful observation and gentle control of the muscles. That is where students need to be patient (the teacher too!) as they understand how their brain gets their body to move appropriately.
Im learning "go tell aunt roudy" even if i played it for 1 year👍🏻
Corrie,do yoi have any tips for practising Shraedick no 4 exetcises ,string crossings. My timing is atrocious and i struggle with the roll of the 3rd finger from the g on d string to d on a string. Any tips wouldvbe appreciated. Love from Australia
Thanks for sharing 🙏.. perfect exercise ..!!👍 I'm an adult beginner and such videos are very helpfull for me.. ❤️🎶🎻
Adorable
You are doing wonderful job.. helping the students without any expectations. Only blessed people can do this.🎉🎉
Thank you!!! Looks like I'll finally get it!!
There were a few really fundamental things I didn’t “get” as a kid learning to play and they led to long term bad habits 🙈 thank you for these videos and I wish you could’ve been my violin teacher many many years ago!
Good video. You have a beautiful family. Brick and Mortar stores are disappearing. Because of high taxes, COVID epidemic, and crime. Buying a violin is a good way to get ripped off unless you have some guidance by someone who knows the trade. There is alot of bad products on the market
very useful👍
I see that A string working overtime ❤
I'm a grumpy british dude, who doesn't like "faff"... But your energy is awesome!
For me, the two most important things in life are Cats and Violins. But I gotta say, that jacket is up there too! Sharp.
I've been playing like 10-20 Minutes a day for 2,5 years now. It definitely got much better and it's occasionally beginning to sound like a violin. But it's still far from playing in front of other people and they would say "that sounds really good" So I'm pretty sure it's more than 10.000 hours for me. :_)
3:35 😂
Could you please do some videos on learning scales? 😍
Best way to learn violin in 2024 is to start in 2014.
The second best way is to start now!
Why is the first thing to get a shoulder rest? Many top players don't use one.
But were they learning online…
@@Corrietheviolinist So you're saying that in order to learn on line, it is mandatory to use a shoulder rest. And that the instruction to learn with out one has to be given only in person? 🤔
Hi Corrie, I think I watched the video you are referring to. BUT: is not how-does-it-sound the most important criterion? And it sounded just fine to me, in fact, it was quite beautiful. You will know that there are different violin schools that each take a different approach. On another note: your video and the other one also illustrate another point. More uttered words per unit of time may not necessarily help to lend weight to a message. Best, Dirk
Doing vibrato incorrectly can lead to carpel tunnel. So no, sounding good is not the most important.
Excellent advice! As a late starter who has enjoyed 6o years of viola and violin, I have two more suggestions. (1) If you're just starting out, make a contract with yourself that you'll stay with it for a year, no matter how discouraged you get. (2) Be sure your days allow for a regular practice time ... and stay with it, even if some days you can manage only 15 minutes. And see Corrie's excellent video on how to practice. Good luck!
I’m still a beginner, and not ready to learn this yet, but it doesn’t hurt to start out omitting bad habits!
Thank you for the short tutorial! Could you also make or recommend a more detailed video on tuning the violin and explain how to tune by ear, about temperament, and how to understand which temperament the tuner or app uses? Additionally, could you explain how to tune the A string (about different standards and which one to use)? Thanks a lot!
Here ya go! ua-cam.com/video/rDpCtdlMDo8/v-deo.htmlsi=h-kV8AccFAvlAIs6
Is it okay to use pseudo-vibrato technique (finger vibrato)? I find it so hard to use wrist and arm vibrato. 😅
You technically can…but I think you’ll find it way easier to use your wrist or arm in conjunction with finger vibrato as you continue learning it.
I've always tried to keep my thumb on playing acoustic guitar but I've never been able to perform it that way. I keep my thumb in line with my Index but the violin sits on the web of my hand since it can't really fit in the fingerboard like the guitar.
Could you please add the subtitle 🙏🏼😅 My English is not very good, not quite sure what is being said 😅😅😅
Aku suka kamu
Aku cinta padamu
All I have to say: THATS A LOT OF ROSIN THERE
Brand new to the violin here! I am 37 and just decided to learn to play violin because it has always been on my bucket list. These tips have been so helpful, even though I am still currently in the screeching witch sound lol.
Will you talk sense.
I tried so many times learning vibrato and I thought that I would never learn it then out of the blue I have been using the methods you taught in the video and I finally had a chance of learning vibrato. I was always a slow learner and thanks to this video I was the best violinist in my violin class thanks so much and pls send more videos like this 🎻🎻🎻
corrie the Violinist why do female violinists with long hair flick there hair back
Putting your violin on your hair either pulls the hair or the violin slides around on it
@@Corrietheviolinist do u know when u did the pirates of caribean song why did u nod ur head so much
I do the brushing my teeth with the bow hold thing!! I just started to laying two weeks ago and I started doing it naturally like two days after I started lol
I'm sitting here listening to the advice and heard nothing wrong (I play cello)
😂😂
I'm only doin' desperado!
Leaves a bittersweet smile that I knew I used to be able to play the violin. I broke some of my fingers years back and the bone didnt heal properly.
Oh my goodness! So sorry.
@Corrietheviolinist it's all good. Probably I'll see if I can have my left fingers fixed through physical therapy in a couple years ❤️🧡💛
good way dont roll your finger best way dont play violin
